The Urology Department at the Emek Medical Center was founded in 1965 and serves the Northeastern population of Israel which represents around 800,000 citizens. The department includes 21 inpatient beds, a pediatric urology unit and clinics. In the department, surgeries are performed as well as procedures that are at the forefront of modern urology.
The areas of activities at the urology department include:
- the treatment of urinary and reproductive system malignancies – with different types of surgeries including robot-assisted surgeries, endoscopic surgeries and different types of innovative treatments such as treatment for bladder tumors with the Synergo device which combines chemotherapy in the bladder with radio waves to increase the effect of the drug.
- Surgeries for kidney stones and Urinary tract – Approximately 450 patients are treated annually thanks to various approaches and using a variety of devices including holmium laser for lithotripsy.
- Laparoscopic/robotic surgeries for different biopsies, tumor removal, and more.
- Pediatric Urology – the department diagnoses and treats a wide range of congenital malformations of the urinary tract and male genitalia.
- As well as counseling and treatment of sexual dysfunction, Incontinence surgeries in women and men, treatments of prostate problems, Urethroplasty and more.
- The department leads in the field of early and advanced diagnosis of prostate cancer in Israel and internationally.
At the Urology clinics, primary urology services as well as specialized urology consultations and follow-ups are provided to thousands of patients per year in various areas.
The Urology department is recognized by the Israeli Scientific Council for full specialization in urological surgery and participates in teaching activities within the Faculty of Medicine at the Technion. The department won various awards internationally in the past 20 years.
The department’s physicians are performing clinical and basic research, and ensure that a high professional level is maintained for the benefit of the patients and the community
The urology department is located in a temporary location and needs to be rebuilt in another location ofthe Building 3 in order to meet the new standards.
This upgrade of the urology department in its new location will enable to hospitalize an increased number of patients while meeting the new standards of hospitalization. It will enable for example the hospitalization of 2 patients per room with option to accept an additional patient in case of urgent needs – in addition to the rooms that enable the hospitalization of a single patient.
The number of consultations and follow-up consultations at the Urology clinics has increased by 25% in the last 5 years which demonstrates the increase in the Urology department’s activities.
In addition, it is anticipated that there will be an increased number of patients in the field of Urologic cancers with the opening of the Beit Shulamit Center which is the new Oncology center of the Emek Medical Center. Indeed, Beit Shulamit that will be one of the most advanced Cancer centers in Israel, will house under a single roof all that is necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer (including a cancer research center and a well-being center) and will attract patients from all Northeastern Israel, including patients suffering from urologic cancers that will need to be treated also in the urology department.
Therefore, there is a significant and growing need for an upgrade of the department in order to allow an increased number of patients to be hospitalized in an optimal manner and to provide the best environment for all the patients that need treatments in the field of urology.
